Giovanni Fattori, Riposo dei marinai, etching on zinc, 14x19 cm, limited edition of the Centenary, 1925

The artwork belongs to the so-called "Limited edition of the Centenary", a collection of 166 Giovanni Fattori's etchings, a great artist of Macchiaioli art trend. The edition was realised thanks to Giovanni Malesci, Fattori's disciple and sole heir, who devised 164 original plates to italian State. This limited edition was published on 6th September 1925 in Firenze by the editor Benaglia for Fattori's centenary of the birth. Each etchings presents in the bottom part the embossing stamp "Centenario/Gio.Fattori/1925" and all of these were printed on wire rod paper. The 166 etchings series represents the almost totality of Fattori's etchings: they were chosen by Malesci, who excluded some from his own collection. The use of veiling printing was excluded for the "Limited edition of the Centenary" in order to avoid every kind of not-authorized interventions for the lack of Fattori's control. The complete series is considered very rare because a lot of individual papers are generally reachable on the market and also because of the low number of the circulation. The artwork is signed "Gio Fattori" on the right bottom and under the signature there is the mark "Centenario/Gio.Fattori/1925".
