The etching, dated 1480-1485, represents the Virgin who warmly embraces her son: a human and intimate scene, different from classical portraits of Sacra Family. The artist obtains deep effects of chiaroscuro with burin and dry point. Mantegna has been one of the first painters who understood the importance of engraving thecniques.
