Giancarlo Prandelli, Isabella d'Este Retouchè, 21x29,5cm (R3)

This is one of the fifteen retouched prints by Giancarlo Prandelli dedicated to Isabella D’Este. She was one of the most loved female subjects of the artist and is represented in many of his works. Interestingly, Prandelli has added several other characteristics and elements of Leonardo in this work. For instance, the hair of Isabella also forms the self portrait of Leonardo in profile. The illustration of another famous painting by Leonardo, Leda with the Swan is depicted on the right and we can also observe a group of angels on the left. This coloured work represents an unusual, but refined juxtaposition of unrelated characters. The bright colours give the work a pop and contemporary impression to the clear Renaissance references. Furthermore, it underlines the bridge that Prandelli establishes, to promote himself as an artist who captivates elements of the Renaissance and the contemporary spheres to draw parallels between tradition and innovation.
