This unique work by Giancarlo Prandelli is one of his most controversial pieces. This painting depicts The Mona Lisa with the face of Salai. The nude woman uncannily resembles Mona Lisa in many ways. The overlapping position of her hands are similar to the manner Leonardo painted Mona Lisa’s hands. Furthermore, the enigmatic and mocking smile unmistakably reminds us of her too. However, the face is of Gian Giacomo Caprotti, who was popularly known as Salai (The Devil). He was Leonardo’s favourite pupil and their relationship as a student and master was rather difficult and controversial. Salai is said to be the model for Leonardo’s St. John the Baptist and Bacchus. Prandelli’s work highlights the female anatomy and we can also notice his recurring codes written in an esoteric language, which reveals the secret behind the design. The blood technique that has been used for this piece provides greater relief to the characteristics of the body and the detailed background. This artwork is signed by the artist on the right corner.
