Salvatore Fiume

Salvatore Fiume (Comiso 1915 – Milano 1997) was a painter, sculptor, architect, writer (he published novels, tales, tragedies, comedies and poems) and scenographer (he worked at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Covent Garden in London and Teatro Massimo in Palermo).

He studied at Regio Istituto d'Arte del Libro in Urbino and then he went in Milan where he met important authors like Quasimodo and Buzzati. At the beginning he was an Art Director at Ivrea but his true love is painting, so he went to Canzo where he dedicated his full-time to paint and to some experiment in sculpture and architecture. He obtained a great success and esteem by critics during his firts exhibition in 1949 at Galleria Borromei. From this moment on his works were published on art magazines, catalogues and he received many public commitions.

He travelled and exhibited his works all over the world. He was influenced by habits, customs and atmospheres of every place he visited so we can find theese elements in his works.

In 1933 he went to Polynesia to visit places where Paul Gaguin lived and painted. His last paintings are influenced by the exotic atmospheres by Gauguin: warm hues, intense chromatic contrasts, simple shapes, fantastic subjects and metaphysical settings. Sensual and buxom Mediterranean and Oriental women are protagonists of this creative period.

Today we can find paintings by Salvatore Fiume both private collections and Italian and foreign museums like Vatican Museums, Ermitage in Saint Petersburg, MoMA in New York, Puškin Museum in Moscow.
