This work is Giancarlo Prandelli’s rendition of the popular subject of Leda and the Swan. The particular theme of greek mythology that most artists painted during the Renaissance, portrays a mortal woman, Leda, and Zeus in the form of a swan. Over the years, this subject matter has been depicted in various styles, however the underlying theme of sexuality and a woman’s fertility has always played a key role. In Prandelli’s work, we see distinctive characteristics that have been added to this traditional subject. One of these is the presence of an enigmatic woman between Leda and the Swan. This unknown woman has her eyes half closed with a definite hairstyle that reminds us of the sketches by Leonardo of his representation of women. A repetitive circular design has been drawn at the feet of Leda and in the form of a snail to the left of the work. The hairstyle of Leda is also showcased in a similar manner. According to the artist, this peculiar circular design signifies the fertility of Leda. Additionally, Prandelli decided to project Leda and the swan indirectly chained to each other. This work is full of connotations and elements drawn to give tribute to Leonardo. To the left, we notice a background similar to the one painted by Leonardo in Mona Lisa’s portrait. There are esoteric writings present that unveil the meanings behind Leonardo’s works.
