Mario Schifano

Mario Schifano (Homs, Libia Italiana 1934 – Roma 1998) is considered the great representative of the Italian Pop Art. He is influenced by most important Italian and foreign innovators like Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns e Robert Rauschenberg. Enormous and monochrome canvas, the use of letters and numbers, subjects inspired by advertising world (his Coca Cola and Esso are very famous). He uses different materials like acrylic and packaging paper. Moreover to try new techniques (like his canvas realized with a computer processing) he supports a contamination between painting, music, cinema and photography. He is inclined to abstract and informal art and a great example are his famous Paesaggi Anemici (Anaemic Landscapes), Vedute Interrotte (Interrupted Views) and cornfields. 

He is always near the Pop culture, considered an artist who lives his time. He realizes many covers for musical contemporary bands like Equipe 84, and he draws two times the Maglia Rosa for Giro d'Italia. 

He dies in Rome in 1988.
