Emilio Scanavino

Emilio Scanavino was born in Genoa in 1922. He graduated at Artistic High School and at the end of the Second World War he started work as a draftsman at the Municipality of Genoa. He devoted his life to art after the great success that he obtained at the XXV Venice Art Festival.

His first paintings are expressionists but this trand will be reduced after his Parisian period in 1947: from this moment on his works will be near Cubist style.

In 1951 he is in London and after this travel his compositions become more and more geometrical. In this period he represents overall religious subjects thanks to his thoughts aboout the great Faith oh his parents.

During theese years Scanavino knows pioneers of Spatialism like Fontana, Dova and Crippa; artists of the Nuclear movement like Baj and Dangeloe and of the group Cobra like Corneille and Jorn.

Between 1953 and 1954 his pantings are characterized by monochrome surfaces on which many symbols and signs are overlapping, creating informal elements. From the end of '60s Scannavino completes his works with architectural elements. After a great success both in Ital and abroad, he dies in Milan in 1986.
