Giovanni Malesci

Giovanni Malesci (Vespignano 1884 – Milano 1969) is one of the most famous descendant of the "Macchia". His master was Giovanni Fattori from 1903 to 1908 and during this period they became friends with a great reciprocal esteem. Malesci learned everything about drawing and colour from Fattori and he recovered subjects and themes of hi master: landscapes, portraits, animals, peasents and plebians. His work started from the reality: the simple life of humble people without commiseration. Thanks to a skilful use of colours he represented the nature with right lirism which made pleasent his compositions and his portraits express feelings of protagonists.

Malesci was named by Giovanni Fattori as his one and only universal heir. For this reason he devoted all his life to promote the activity of his master organizing exhibitions and events dedicated to Fattori in Italian and European museums and galleries.

During the World War he was a soldier and he documented the pain of the conflict with drawings. At the end of the war he worked for the Superintendence of Galleries in Florence and he painted very much.

In 1925 he went to Milan and then to Genoa and Rome. He came back to Milan in 1929 and his works were acclaimed by Carlo Carrà. During these years Malesci worked and travelled a lot. He was charmed by Belgium, Bretagne and Netherlands. These countries inspired many landscapes of him.

When he was old he went in Liguria and died in Milan in 1969.
