William Hogarth

William Hogarth was born in 1967 in London where he lived all his life. He served his apprenticeship at the workshop of Gamble, a silversmit. From 1720 Hogarth was an engraver, he illustrated books and published satirical prints about contemporary. From 1725 he painted also individual and collective portraits.

From 1731 he realized his Moral works, famous satirical series representing bad habits of middle class: A Harlot's Progress (1731), A Rake's Progress (1735), The four times of  the day (1738), Marriage à la mode (1743-45), Industry and Idleness (1747). The next series bu Hogarth were more popular and educational as: Beer street and Gin lane (1751) and The four stages of cruelty (1751). 

In 1757 he was named "Painter of the King" but he died in 1764.
