Francisco Goya

Francisco Goya was born in Fuendetodos in 1746 and he was the last son of six. He practiced artistic techniques at the workshop of José Luzán Martínez, a painter of his town. The period (1770) he lived in Italy was very important for him. When he came back some important works were commissioned to him.

In '90s he started painting portraits. The main subjects were nobles of the Court of Madrid, linked to the king Carlo III. In 1789 he is Royal Painter at the Court if Carlo IV. During this period he realized little canvas called "Quadritos", that's to say paintings on metal sheet, and "Caprichos", engravings which represented a strong satire about humanity. Social and political events of Spain are the main themes of Goya's production. Between 1808 and 1820 he realized a series titled "Disasters of the war" and in 1819 he leaved the Court for political causes and went in country near Madrid. This place was called  "Quinta del Sordo" (because Goya became deaf in '90s).

In 1824 he ran away to Bordeaux for political reasons again. Here he went on working till he died in 1828.
