Giorgio De Chirico

Giorgio De Chirico (Volos, Grecia 1888 – Roma 1978) is the most important representative of Metaphysical Painting. He was born in Greece, studied at the Academy and travelled through Italy, from Milan to Florence (where he painted his first Italian Place). At the end he estabilished in Paris. Here he lived with his brother Alberto Savinio and knew contemporary painting.

His best creative period was in Ferrara (from 1917). Metaphysical atmospheres were yet the centre of his compositions before the World War but after the meeting with Carlo Carrà, De Chirico improved his tecnique. Rarefied sets, Mediterranean daily light, classical architectures, quiet and silent atmospheres with no time and space. Inner scenes are characterized by objects released from the context in which they are, human beings are dummies without a face, robots.

In '50s he realized overall views of Venice and manners self-portraits. Some of his masterpieces are Italian Places, Enigmas, the famous painting Le Muse Inquietanti and his many self-portraits.
