Carlo Domenici

Carlo Domenici (Livorno 1897 - Isola d’Elba 1981) is one of the most representative artists of the group of Labronici from Livorno which was founded on 1920 at Caffè Bardi (historical point of meeting for the members of the group). Their style is near to post macchiaioli like their subjects (landscapes, Tuscan country, seascapes, peasents and animals at work...).

Domenici painted country life blending naturalism and chromatic pleasure. Tuscany is always protagonist of his landscapes, overall three different areas: Maremma with peasents and animals at work, so similar in technique and style to Giovanni Fattori; bucolic masterpieces where warm hues of the country meet strong features of men and women who work in fields; seascapes of Elba Island, where brilliant colours and bright lights represent the atmosphere of the sea. Last but not least his loved Livorno depicted with care and great emotions.

In 1940 he went to Florence but he went on painting his favourite subjects coming back many times to his homeland. In 1970 he finally established at Elba Island and in 1976 a stroke made his right arm paralysed. He was compelled to leave painting and when his wife died he became totally dejected.

Comparini died in 1981, after the election as President of the Labronici group.
