Eugenio Carmi

Born in Genoa on 17th February 1920, at first Eugenio Carmi migrates to Zurich because of racial persecutions, then he returns to Italy, where he resumes his artistic studies. At first his style is figurative, then informal, then abstract on 1950s-60s. In this period he is also influenced by his job at the iron and steel factory in Cornigliano (Italsider) and, thinking that industry has to make culture, he makes avantgarde artworks. He is also ispired by iron and steel used every day and makes artworks and lithographated metal sheets on 1960s. In this period he involves some artists and intellectuals friends (e.g. Umberto Eco, Kurt Blum, Emanuele Luzzati…) in his venture of proposing a serial and more accessible to public art with his Galleria del Deposito. Fascinated by new technological possibilities, he makes kinetics and audiovisual artworks. From early 1970s he deepens and affirms a geometric language and a return of the materic dimension, almost following on his previous informal artworks. He dies on 16th February 2016 in Lugano.
