A unique work on wood by an anonymous artist of the French School. The subject of the work is a young girl who seems to be turning away from the viewer, almost as if she had been photographed in a completely natural gesture. The style denies the use of outline in favour of colour; the girl is not defined in detail, but outlined by essential brushstrokes. The dark background is reminiscent of Flemish portraits from the Renaissance period, while the absent eyes recall the manner of Modigliani.
